Can you guess the classic allegory the picture of this package refers to? What might the connection of this story be to coaching? I can reveal the answer to this trivia question in our discovery call. (Apologies for the photo being a little fuzzy).
As you likely know, 360 degree feedback is a common coaching and professional development tool. However, most of us coaches do not actually experience a 360 that assesses our own coaching skills. The following tool was designed to assess the following six coaching competencies with clear, behavioral indicators:
- Active Listening: Communicating and clarifying understanding, and eliciting information using both active and passive behaviors in order to engage people, make them feel heard, facilitate development, and gather information.
- Building Positive Relationships: Building trust, showing respect, and being sensitive to others' needs in order to create a space where people feel safe, feel comfortable, and can learn.
- Constructive Questioning: Asking clear and compelling questions in order to help people gain insight into their choices, feelings, assumptions, and motivations.
- Creating Negative Space: Holding off judgment and remaining open while others speak in order to give others sufficient room to explain themselves, gather relevant facts, and make informed interventions.
- Encouraging Development: Helping people identify developmental opportunities, providing perspectives, and highlighting their strengths in order to facilitate professional development and increase self-awareness through introspection and action.
- Facilitating Goal Attainment: Helping others set specific, realistic, and challenging goals, then monitor progress so that they can achieve, maintain high standards, and build the capacity to self-regulate.
Invite as many people as you like to give you feedback on these critical coaching skills. You can invite clients, peers, mentors, family members -- anyone who has the opportunity to observe you and thus has an informed, valued perspective. Your report will always be available on-demand, and an action plan to develop your skills is automatically included.
