There is no question that stress, fear, pain, and trauma are contributors to the diseases and blocks in our lives.
Stress alone accounts for a large percentage of visits to physicians. As per some research, the brain starts to release stress hormones if a situation is more than one of the following: novel, unpredictable, threatening - either to your survival or your ego - and something over which you don't have a sense of control. This response is evolutionary, and the brain reacts the same way it always has.
For cavemen, the stress response would have kicked in at the site of an angry predator. Today, it will start when you realize you won't make it to your child's daycare pickup on time or trying to prove yourself right at work place meetings or dealing with conflicts in relationships. Combating these feelings is not easy and begins with resilience. Too often people see relaxation as the anecdote for stress. Going to the spa or watching a funny movie this weekend will not mean the person who threatens your ego every morning at the office or home will disappear. He/she will still be there on Monday morning waiting for you. Stress is a known cause for many diseases including depression. A new study has also revealed that stress can make us overeat and can cause excessive weight problem. Then what is the permanent solution?
Mindfulness -- paying attention on purpose and without judgment -- will help you deal with life's challenges more calmly and effectively. Mindful awareness can be defined as paying attention to present moment experiences with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to be with what is. It is an excellent antidote to the stresses of modern times.
